Introduction

Here are some step-by-step instructions for how to build a basic catapult using popsicle sticks and rubber bands. If you’re looking for instructions for the build Mark does in the prototyping lesson, see the Mark's Catapult Build guide. If you’d like to do something slightly more challenging but not as difficult as Mark's build, you can reference other online tutorials, like this one.

Tools & Materials

• 5-15 popsicle sticks
• 4-5 rubber bands
• Bottle cap
  • We used a metal bottle cap, but you can use a plastic one or any small “bucket”-shaped object.
• A small object to use as a projectile
  • If you’re building this catapult for your Build #1, you may already know what the projectile should be. For example, if you’re building a candy launcher like Mark, your projectile will be the candy.
  • You can also try using cotton balls, balls of string, or coins.
• Optional:
  • Eye protection to wear while testing
  • Glue or tape (unless you are able to secure your bottle cap with a rubber band!)

Assembling the Catapult

(1) Make a stack of 3-10 popsicle sticks, and secure with a rubber band on either end.

It’s easier to work with fewer popsicle sticks, but more may make your catapult more powerful (by changing your launch angle and increasing the amount that you can move your catapult arm)!

(2) Stack 2 other popsicle sticks together, and secure with a rubber band on 1 side.

(3) Pull the non-secured ends of the two popsicle sticks you just attached apart an inch or so, making sure not to slide the rubber band off of the other end.

• Then, slide the stack of popsicle sticks from the first step in between these two, forming a cross or airplane shape.
